JAWS Hints

Many of the text and graphical links on the D.S.A. Enterprises for PA, Inc. web page have a feature known as a Link Title Attribute. This is simply a description of what will be opened when you activate that link. If you are using the computer with a mouse, the Link Title, information is displayed in a small window whenever you hover over that link. However, when you use the computer with a screen reader like JAWS, you need to enable the reading of the link's Title Attribute in the screen reader's settings. The following steps will show you how to enable these settings for both Text and Graphical links in JAWS.

Reading Text Link Titles

  1. To start, open your web browser, such as Internet Explorer.
  2. Press the key combination of Insert+V, or Capslock+V if you are using the laptop keyboard layout of JAWS. This opens the Quick Settings dialog box in JAWS 13.0 or later. If you are using an earlier version of JAWS, this keystroke opens the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box.
  3. In JAWS 13.0 or later, type the phrase "Text Links", without the quotation marks in the search field. (If you are using an earlier version of JAWS, you can avoid this step.)
  4. Press the down arrow key until you reach the Text Links Show Using setting. The default setting is "Screen Text" which has JAWS read the visible label on the screen.
  5. Press the Spacebar until the Text Links Show Using setting changes to Title.
  6. Lastly, press the Tab key until you reach the OK button, and press the Enter key to save the setting, and exit either the Quick Settings or the Adjust JAWS settings dialog box.
  7. Now, when you navigate over many of the links of our D.S.A. Enterprises web page, JAWS will give you additional information. For Example: instead of saying "Home" when you move the Home Link, JAWS will now say, "Home: Please choose this link to return to the D.S.A. Enterprises home page".

Reading Graphical Link Titles

  1. To start, open your web browser, such as Internet Explorer.

  3. In JAWS 13.0 or later, type the phrase "Graphics Recognize by", without the quotation marks in the search field. (If you are using an earlier version of JAWS, you can avoid this step.)
  4. Press the down arrow key until you reach the Graphics Recognize by setting. The default setting is "Alt Attribute" which has JAWS read the Alt Tag label for the graphic.
  5. Press the Spacebar until the Graphics Recognize by setting changes to Title.
  6. Lastly, press the Tab key until you reach the OK button, and press the Enter key to save the setting, and exit either the Quick Settings or the Adjust JAWS settings dialog box.
  7. Now, when you navigate over many of the graphical links of our D.S.A. Enterprises web page, JAWS will give you additional information. For Example: instead of saying "Graphic Home" when you move to the Home graphical Link, JAWS will now say, "Graphic Home: Please choose this link to return to the D.S.A. Enterprises home page".
